Visual Records' Traveler Program Goes "Live" at Kaiser Permanente Point Loma Travel Clinic (17-September-2007) Visual Records' travel advisory software system, Traveler, is currently being used "live" by Kaiser Permanente's Point Loma Travel Advisory clinic in San Diego. The Travel Advisory clinic, which serves the counties of San Diego, San Bernardino, Riverside and Orange, is one of two travel advisory offices serving Southern California. The other office is located in Los Angeles. By using the Traveler program, the staff at the Travel Advisory clinic are able to easily manage and enter all information for a trip and traveler in an automated and efficient process. The program determines specific immunizations, prescriptions and over-the-counter medications a patient (traveler) needs based on a patient's past immunization records, health conditions, allergies and current medications as well as the disease risks known for the country or countries the patient (traveler) is visiting. After prescriptions are entered for a patient, a primary doctor can easily review and approve these prescriptions electronically. Reports are then batch printed for all approved trips and packages are mailed out to the patients, containing their traveler information (showing their immunizations, prescriptions and over-the-counter medications), a Staying Healthy letter (that includes applicable State Department warnings) and appropriate country/disease handouts. Prescriptions are either mailed or faxed depending on how soon the traveler is departing on their trip. The staff at the Travel Advisory clinic give personalized consultations to patients (travelers) who are traveling internationally and essentially, advise them on how best to prepare for their trips. These registered nurses are specifically trained in and knowledgeable about travel medicine. This service is free to all Kaiser Permanente members and is an invaluable source of information for members who are traveling to an unfamiliar country or who just want to check the latest conditions/diseases for a country they have previously visited. The registered nurses suggest that patients contact their office four to six weeks before their trip. |
